Take off those ski boots, put on your dancing shoes, and kick up your heels! The 8th Annual Spring Gala is coming to Birch Hill.

The Gala will be held at the Birch Hill Cross-Country Ski Center on Saturday, April 18 from 8 to 11 p.m. Music will be provided by Steve Brown and the Bailers, an acoustic trio, and the floor will be open for dancing. Refreshments will be provided by HooDoo Brewery. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the door or from an FXC skier.

More than 160 people skied just over 3,000 kilometers on Saturday at the Ski Your Age in Kilometers at Birch Hill Recreation Area. The event, presented by Banner Health / Fairbanks Memorial Hospital (FMH), drew people ranging from ages 3 to 70. Nolan Hays and Amelia Petersen, both 3, were the youngest participants. Tom Wickwire, 70, was the oldest

An impressive number of people skied their age or more. Just over 50 young skiers, some skiing twice their age or more, reached the Platinum (top) achievement level. Two skiers, Riley Troyer, 20, and Eric DiFolco, 12, even managed to ski three times their age (60 and 36 kilometers, respectively). A few others managed to reach twice their age or more: Ben Koenig (16 years, 32k), Tjarn Bross (13, 31k), Sam Delamere (13, 33k), Eloise Darrow (13, 30k), Maggie Druckenmiller (12, 24k) and Kaya Ratzlaff (11, 22k). Just fewer than 60 skiers of all ages reached the Platinum level, while 22 reached the Gold level, 36 reached the Silver level, and 33 reached the Bronze level.

This was the eleventh year of Ski Your Age, which is organized by Fairbanks Cross Country (FXC), the junior race-training program of the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks (NSCF).  The event serves as a fundraising for NSCF-FXC.

(Note: This story was updated on 12/31/14 to add a few people who weren't included or didn't have kilometers.)
