Hello cross country skiing fans!
The 2017 Doyon Utilities SuperTour Finals and Distance National Championships start Monday afternoon at Birch Hill. The women's Skiathlon (7.5Km classic + 7.5Km skate) starts at 5PM, and the men's Skiathlon (11.25Km classic + 11.25Km skate) starts at 6:15PM. Junior classic-only races for females and males start simultaneously with the senior races, but the junior races finish after the classic leg.
This week's races will have the highest level of competition of any cross country ski race held in Fairbanks since the 1984 World Cup. Featured in the field are all four US women who have won World Championship medals: Kikkan Randall, Jessie Diggins, Caitlin Gregg and Sadie Bjornsen. Randall (sprint), Diggins (sprint and team sprint) and Bjornsen (team sprint) won medals in last month's World Championships in Lahti, Finland. It was a record-setting medal haul for the US.
The Birch Hill race courses provide excellent opportunities for spectating. If you come to watch, please be aware that spectating is ON FOOT ONLY. No spectators are allowed to ski on the course beginning one hour prior to the start. Birch Hill trails will be closed to public skiing from that time until each day's racing is complete. All trails are open on non-race days, and up until one hour prior to the start on race days. PLEASE do not skate on the classic courses where tracks have been set!
Also, please be aware that the Old Warming Hut is reserved for race volunteers from Sunday night (26th) through the night of April 2. The Old Warming Hut will not be available for public use during that time period. The Birch Hill Cross Country Ski Center building will be open extended hours during the week, so those who normally would use the Old Warming Hut can make use of the BHCCSC.
Please come up to Birch Hill and watch some of the fastest skiers in the world race on our local trails! It's an opportunity you won't want to miss.
