The 28th Annual Denali State Bank Sonot Kkaazoot happens in less than a week and things are looking good. Organizers skied the Chena River portion on Sunday and reported solid conditions. The inspections will continue.
Sonot shirts and headbands—blue and red, no white—are still available and will be sold at the bib pickup and at the banquet after the race. Cash or checks only, please.
This Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks race is made possible by generous support from title sponsor Denali State Bank, as well as from sponsors Doyon Ltd., Fort Wainwright, and the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
The race will be held on Saturday and will include four separate events with three staggered mass starts. The 50-kilometer classic-technique-only event starts at 9:30am. The 50-kilometer and 40-kilometer freestyle (skate or classic) events both start at 10am. Finally, the 20-kilometer freestyle event starts at 10:30am. Feed stations, hosted by local school ski teams, are located every five to six kilometers on the course and start at 10am.
If the river is deemed unsafe, all events will be held entirely on the Birch Hill cross-country ski trails and are scaled back in distance to account for the additional hills.
An Awards Ceremony and banquet is held after the race at 6pm in the Birch Hill Ski Center. Soups, breads, and drinks are provided. Skiers are asked to bring a salad or dessert to feed 10 hungry people.
